Why Shape
Why Shape Products Outperform
We’ve faced complex design challenges for over 20 years. That’s why our designs don’t only come to life — they build brands and performance.
Our team is deliberately interdisciplinary: gear heads, tinkerers, prototypers, entrepreneurs and experimenters. Having such a diverse set of perspectives forces each of us outside of our comfort zone and into the area where innovation resides.

Comparison
How Shape Compares
Plenty of people can draw a product. The question is how many of those drawings end up on a shelf with a barcode on them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does product design cost?
In our experience, design accounts for 25–35% of what it costs to get a product ready to sell. The range across projects is wide — it is quite common for two projects we are running at the same time to differ by more than 15×, the equivalent of $20,000 to $300,000. We spend time up front understanding your goals so the number we give you is a realistic one rather than a guess.
How long does the design process take?
From about six weeks to more than two years. A simple non-electronic product needing minimal research sits at the short end; innovation-led projects run far longer. Because the work varies so much we estimate every project on its own, and you will have a preliminary timeline within a day or two of getting in touch.
Are you a better fit for startups or established companies?
Both — we look at the mindset rather than the size. We partner with clients who are committed to introducing new ideas, whether that is a first-time founder or a brand that has been on shelves for decades. Our work covers both, which is why the same team has designed for Sharper Image and for pre-launch startups.
What comes first, the design or the prototype?
They run together. Prototyping is an instrumental part of product design and happens throughout the process, not once at the end. There are many different kinds of prototype, and which ones you need depends on what the project has to prove.
Will you work on a product that was designed somewhere else?
Often, yes. We will look at what exists and tell you honestly what we find. We frequently pick up freelance work that stalled for want of prototyping capability. One caveat worth setting early: CAD files that were not built well often need real remediation before they can move to a prototype, and we would rather flag that at the start than halfway through.
Do you handle manufacturing as well as design?
We work alongside manufacturing rather than replacing it. On projects like FABRIQ and TAP we managed overseas production partners directly; on others we hand a manufacturable design to the partner you already have. Either way, cost of manufacture is something we design toward rather than discover afterwards.
What happens after I send the form?
A designer gets back to you — not a salesperson. We will ask what you are building, what stage it is at and what you are working toward, then come back with a preliminary view of scope and timeline. There is no cost to that conversation and no obligation attached to it.
